Staff Pharmacist Duties
A staff pharmacist, also known as a relief pharmacist, is primarily responsible for overseeing proper pharmacy dispensing techniques as well as establishing good communication with patients. A staff pharmacist is the main consultant between patients and the pharmacy, and is therefore required to be compassionate, courteous, considerate and knowledgeable. They will also be required to have a deep understanding of pharmacy computer systems, which includes the ability to process refills, profiles, packaging and general workflow. A staff pharmacist will also answer phones, take messages, enter new prescriptions and approve patient refill requests. In general, a staff pharmacy professional is responsible for overseeing all functions within the pharmacy on a day-to-day basis, ensuring that proper laws and policies are followed and practiced. The ability to manage multiple tasks in a professional manner is a desired quality of a staff pharmacist.
Staff Pharmacist Education Requirements
A staff pharmacist is required to hold a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy or a doctorate of pharmacy, which can give them an edge in the hiring process. They will also need to have the proper state licensure by the state of hire, as well as up to five years of retail experience as a pharmacist. Upon hire, a staff pharmacist is required to pass an FBI or Medicare background check, which will approve them for pharmacy work. A staff pharmacist will be standing almost 100% of the time they are on the job, so great physical fitness and stamina are required as well. A staff pharmacist must be qualified to communicate effectively with both patients and other staff members to ensure the proper workflow of the environment.
