Clinical Pharmacist Duties
A clinical pharmacist is responsible for working directly with physicians and other medical professionals in a hospital or clinic setting. Those who work in a health care unit are assigned certain patients, in which the clinical pharmacist must decide the best medications to take care of a certain symptom. They are trained to work directly with patients, helping them find the right medicine at the right dosage. A clinical pharmacist must have hands-on experience, and must know how to assess and monitor patients as they take certain prescription medications. A clinical pharmacist may also be asked to diagnose a previously untreated illness, consult with other physicians and educate the patient about recovery options. They are the most important staff members for consultations and health education, assuring that the patients recover in the best way possible.
Clinical Pharmacist Education Requirements
A certified clinical pharmacist is one who is trained in pharmacology, chemistry and biology. They must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field as well as having completed a Pharm.D. program. From there, the clinical pharmacist can choose to specialize in a certain area. A clinical pharmacist often chooses to specialize in patient diagnosis and patient care. After obtaining the required degrees and diplomas, the prospective clinical pharmacist must then pass the North American License Exam, which grants them a license to practice. They must also be licensed by their preferred state as well. Overall, a clinical pharmacist is required to have experience interacting with patients, as well as having a compassionate personality, critical thinking skills and effective communication abilities.
