Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to work with students who have a variety of disabilities, including but not limited to learning disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities, and emotional disturbances. The Special Education Teacher will develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), provide specialized instruction, and collaborate with general education teachers and support staff to ensure the academic success of all students.


Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
  • Provide direct instruction to students in a variety of settings, including self-contained classrooms, resource rooms, and inclusive classrooms.
  • Assess students’ progress regularly, adjust teaching strategies, and modify the curriculum to meet individual needs.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, parents, and other professionals to support student growth.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and IEP documentation in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans and provide positive behavioral support to students.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and other multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Ensure that students receive the appropriate accommodations and modifications as outlined in their IEPs.
  • Stay current with Arizona’s educational standards, laws, and regulations for special education.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

Licensure and Certifications (Required in Arizona):

  • Arizona Special Education Certification:
  • Arizona Department of Education (ADE) certification in Special Education (K-12).
  • Special Education Endorsement (mild/moderate or moderate/severe disabilities).
  • Standard Teaching Certification:
  • A valid Arizona teaching certificate (Instructional I or II).
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card:
  • Required for all educators in Arizona, available from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
  • Special Education Teacher Preparation Program:
  • Completion of an approved educator preparation program with a focus on special education.
  • Arizona State Exams (if applicable):
  • Passing scores on the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments (AEPA) for special education, or an alternative route to certification.

    Additional Skills:

  • Knowledge of Arizona state standards and IEP development processes.
  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and with varied learning needs.
  • Proficiency in using educational technology and assistive devices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with students, parents, and colleagues.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with students with various disabilities (e.g., autism, intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbances).
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish or proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is a plus.
  • Certification or training in behavior management techniques (e.g., ABA, PBIS).
