School-Based Sign Language Interpreter

Job Summary:
We are seeking a qualified and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to provide interpreting services for students in a school setting in Gaffney, SC. The ideal candidate will facilitate communication between Deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others, including teachers, peers, and staff, ensuring equal access to educational opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and activities using American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to support the academic progress of students.
  • Adapt interpreting style to meet the needs of the students' individual communication modes.
  • Assist in promoting Deaf culture awareness and understanding within the school community.
  • Provide support in various school settings, including classrooms, assemblies, and extracurricular activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interpreting settings.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Certification from a recognized interpreting program (preferred but not required).
  • Prior experience in educational settings (K-12) is an advantage.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to the unique needs of each student.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and the challenges faced by Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in educational environments.
