Resume Tips For New Grads

You’ve worked hard, graduated college and now it is time to get a job! What is more important than a solid resume? Nothing. This piece of paper could really make or break you when employers are narrowing down potential candidates to call for interviews, so you must craft your resume to its very best to get that job. Here are some tips on how to make your resume shine.

Customize Content, Every Time

You found a job opening you would like the apply to. You click apply and read the job description. This is a critical moment in the job search process. From the start, ask yourself what is the employer looking for? Pull keywords from the job description and home in on what the business is asking for. If you can provide what they are looking for, put those specific skills on your resume.

A Great First Impression

To stand out, you need to capture the attention of the employer from the start. This resume is your first impression so make sure you take the time to spell check, grammar check and have others proofread it. Make the resume easy to read and really highlight your communication skills throughout the piece.

Who You Are

It is so important to highlight who you are and what you can bring to the table. Describe what you have learned and what skills you have obtained, no matter how limited they may feel. Highlight courses you have taken in college and how those courses taught you knowledge of the industry you are pursuing. Mention any sort of group projects you were involved in as these are excellent examples of experience collaborating with teams for a common goal.

Experience That Isn’t Work Experience

Work experience is always the dreaded section of a resume for new grads, but it doesn’t have to be. If you worked a part-time job in college, that is valid work experience and should be noted. Another area to highlight would be any internships. Internships give you a very real visual of the working world and allow you to see and learn from people in the roles you would like to obtain after graduation. Lastly, don’t’ forget to touch on any type of capstone courses or classes where you worked with a company to help them achieve success.

Things to Consider

  • Use common and clean looking fonts
  • Mention GPA in your resume if it was over 3.5
  • Have a font size of 10 or 12
  • Your resume should be one to two pages
  • If they ask for a cover letter, take the time to write a cover letter

Your resume is your first opportunity to get your foot in the door so take the time to make your resume the best it can be. They should be picking up the phone to call you soon!
