After thousands and thousands of votes, the results are in for Soliant Health’s 9th annual list of the 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in America.
A six-way tie between:
- Florida
- Illinois
- New York
- North Carolina
- Pennsylvania
- and Utah
For the first time ever, no state has more than two hospitals represented.
Less than half of this year’s hospitals were on last year’s list, while a slight majority of this year’s entries (including some of the top entries) were not part of our our previous edition.

- Dell-children’s Medical Center, Austin TX
(50 votes)After the completion of a new south tower in 2013, this Level I pediatric trauma center currently operates 248 beds, 98 of which are dedicated to specialty care.
The facility’s current name – and colorful multi level grounds – are just some of the results of a $25-million grant from Dell Technology founder Michael Dell.
- Primary Children’s Hospital, Salt Lake City, UT
(55 votes)Utah seems to have a large number of attractive hospitals, with many facilities from the state gracing our list over the years. Celebrating its first year in our rankings, Primary Children’s Hospital is a 289-bed facility in Salt Lake City. Originally founded in 1911, its current form is still one of the oldest buildings in our rankings, whose current structure dates back to 1990.
- Broughton Hospital, Morganton, NC
(99 votes) The sole “heritage” building on our list (one of the only in our history), 134-year-old Broughton is by-far the oldest building ever to make our rankings. Its marble-and-brick facade proves that some of the most beautiful buildings are traditional designs that have stood the test of time.
- Sioux Center Health, Sioux Center, Iowa
(134 votes)Dropping seven spots this year, the goal of this 123,500 square foot facility is to connect staff and patients with nature. It was designed and built in 2014 using an evidence-based processes to create a new healing environment.
- La Rabida Children’s Hospital, Chicago, IL
(193 votes)La Rabida is the only hospital in the country solely dedicated to caring for children with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or who have been abused or neglected. And there’s a beauty all of its own to that mission.
La Rabida is recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its medical home programs and has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.
- St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN
(249 votes) Standing out for its inspiring statues outside the facility as much as the special touches inside, St. Jude is a leading children’s hospital pioneering research and treatments for kids with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
- Firsthealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst, NC
(328 votes)Also new to our list for 2017, this striking series of curved glass plateaus stand above a multi-segment landscape of treed oasis that welcome patients and their visitors. The facility’s look and feel are manifested in its high rate of patient satisfaction (10th in the state).
- Intermountain Medical Center, Murray, UT
(932 votes) The flagship of Utah’s Intermountain hospital network makes its debut in our rankings this year. Tied for #1 in U.S. News and World Report’s 2015-2016 “Best Hospitals” rankings, this building’s exterior features natural-looking waterfalls cascading down walls into square, modern ponds that reflect the beauty of nature, visible through floor-to-ceiling windows inside.
- Pinnacle Health – West Shore, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
(1,448 votes) Making its way onto our list for the second time, adding additional votes and rising eight spots since last year, this 108 bed, acute care, full service hospital is located in a wooded setting with walking trails and a healing garden with contemporary landscaping.
- Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, Wheaton, Illinois
(2,512 votes)Marianjoy has made it onto our rankings in 2016, 2013 and 2009. Moving up two spots this year, the first of two Illinois entries on our 2017 list also features a delightful multi-level campus as well as visually-engaging courtyards and walkways.
The visual pièce-de-résistance of this facility is a warm-water therapy pool, surrounded by glass walls and ceiling, overlooking a first-of-its-kind ‘rain garden’.
- Flagler Hospital, St. Augustine, Florida
(3,074 votes)Established in 1889, this not-for-profit facility rises one spot this year, offering “Centers of Excellence” in bariatrics, heart, cancer, maternity, orthopedics and sinus. Flagler also maintained the most consistent number of votes between the current and previous year.
The facility was included on the list of America’s Best Hospitals in 2007 by U.S. News & World Report, and named by HealthGrades as one of America’s Best 50 Hospitals in 2011.
- Norton Sound Regional Hospital, Nome, Alaska
(3,375 votes)Ranked 11th in our 2013 list, and 6th in our 2016 list, this three-story, 36-bed facility holds on to a top-10-ranking at spot #9 on this year’s list.
The $168-million facility serves a population of 10,000, in an untamed wilderness that includes the isolated city of Nome.
- Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, MO
(5,432 votes) On our list for the first time, the Mosaic building is a triumph of strong-lined glass towers and an expansive curved facade of windows facing out onto carefully-landscaped greenery. The net result is a facility that stands tall with both confidence and compassion.
- Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center’s Andrews Women’s Hospital, Fort Worth, TX
(6,205 votes)This specialty hospital is a place just for women, through all ages and stages of life. Baylor Scott & White’s Andrews Women’s Hospital is a state of the art facility in more ways than one. Its next generation health care systems and comprehensive art collections make this a a truly healing and soothing environment.
- Kettering Medical Center, Kettering, OH
(6,205 votes)For the fifth time, Kettering Health Network has been named one of the 15 Top Health systems in the country by Truven Health Analytics, for quality, affordable health care. In 2016 Kettering Medical Center added Kettering Cancer Center to their campus with the guidance of a patient advisory council. The building features floor-to-ceiling windows and natural elements like water features and fireplaces to help create a soothing and welcoming atmosphere.
- Eskenazi Hospital, Indianapolis, IN
(6,416 votes)One of the tallest buildings in the history of our rankings, the 280 foot-high Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital was completed in 2013. The building was certified as a LEED Gold building in 2015.
A permanent 12,000-square-foot wall sculpture installation here by artist Adam Frank received the 2014 Public Art Network award recognizing his compelling public work entitled “May/September”.
- Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Pittsburgh, PA
(6,878 votes) Founded in 1890, the newly-completed hospital building was ranked seventh on our 2010 list when it opened, as well as 10th by HealthExecNews in its 2012 list of most beautiful hospitals in the world.
- Summit Pacific Medical Center, Elma, Washington
(10,233 votes) This “sleek but not cold” 2012 design features rough stone tiles covering public areas, stylish recessed lighting, and warm-toned wood surfaces. The 42,000-square-foot Summit Pacific rises 5 spots to number 4 in our 2017 rankings.
- Doctors Memorial Hospital, Bonifay, Florida
(11,088 votes) Dropping only two spots to third-place after taking the top spot last year, Doctors Memorial Hospital is arguably the most consistent entry in the history of our rankings.
Celebrating its fifth year on our list, Northern Florida’s outstanding small hospital has ranked 6th, 3rd (in three different years) and 1st (in 2016).
- Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, Elmhurst, Illinois
(12,700 votes)This building’s stylish, unintimidating looks have more in-common with a contemporary hotel than most medical facilities.
Built from the ground up to incorporate the latest trends in healthcare design, our 2017 runner-up is enjoying its 6th year on our list (it was also the runner-up in 2013 and 2016).
- Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, New Jersey
(12,700 votes)Rising 3 spots from last year’s rankings (after rising 13 spots between 2015 and 2016) this 480-bed acute care facility boasts water views from most patient rooms, a free concierge service, and room service for both patients and guests.
In 2015/2016, Riverview received the highest ranking possible in several U.S. News & World Report regional hospital categories.
- Orange Regional Medical Center, Middletown, NY
(13,539 votes)Nominated in previous years and making it into our top rankings for the first time ever this year, Orange Regional Medical Center offers high-tech services in a visually stunning “impeccable, healing environment” that’s also comfortable and welcoming. According to the hospital, many patients have described it as “feeling more like home than a hospital.”
In our opinion, what really makes this hospital stand out is artist Steven James Petruccio’s fantastically-uplifting murals that cover the walls of the hospital’s Children’s Emergency Department from-floor-to-ceiling: A feature that alone should qualify this facility for our top spot, which it has earned.
