Medical Imaging Duties

A medical imaging specialist plays an important role in diagnostics and improved patient health. Essential duties include creating images inside the patient’s body to create accurate diagnoses, assess medically affected areas and plan for the proper treatments. A medical imaging professional must know how to use such technologies as sonography and radiography to take internal images of a patient’s body. Typical daily tasks include processing images of internal organs, analyzing tissues and reading other bodily function levels on a screen in order to make an accurate diagnosis. Most medical imaging professionals choose to specialize in specific areas of imaging, which comes with its own set of daily duties and requirements.

Medical Imaging Education Requirements

A medical imaging expert is required to have a licensed certificate or an associate’s degree in order to be considered for candidacy for a professional position in a hospital or medical clinic. Most states require certification from a national board as well, and acquiring it is heavily advised. Finally, a medical imaging professional must acquire certification from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, depending on the area of specialization that the medical imaging student chooses to pursue. Most prospective medical imaging individuals choose to attend courses that will give them hands-on experience with imaging technologies and patient interaction in order to develop necessary abilities such as critical thinking skills, compassionate patient communication and effective teamwork.
