This year’s top 20 was narrowed down from 96 hospital nominations, the largest-ever number of hospitals our contest has seen. Additionally, the voting record was shattered this year with a combined total of 8,542,596 votes.
There were a handful of states that saw a little more love this year. Florida was represented three times and Illinois, California, and Pennsylvania each had two hospitals make our list. Every other hospital in our 2019 rankings comes from a different state.
Some hospitals are repeat winners, but a majority of the facilities were new to the competition. Find out what makes these special hospitals so beautiful in our 2019 top 20 list!
- Cook Children’s Medical Center, Fort Worth, TX
(4,634 votes) The giant fantastical statue located at the main entrance of the hospital looks like one of the iconic multi-story statues from Walt Disney World’s iconic Art of Animation hotel. The whimsical statue makes it very clear that the children are of the highest priority here, a beautiful sentiment that can be seen throughout the hospital and is put to practice by a wonderful staff. Who wouldn’t want to try and get well at such an enchanting facility? Worthy indeed of being highlighted as one of America’s most beautiful hospitals.
- St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN
(4,884 votes) Finding cures. Saving children. That is the simple, yet beautiful, mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Their founder Danny Thomas’ vision is that no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay. Since they opened their doors 50 years ago, treatments invented at St. Jude has helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80%. It is no surprise this world-renowned hospital landed a spot on our list.
- Marian Regional Medical Center, Santa Maria, CA
(6,879 votes) Marian Regional Medical Center is recognized as a beautiful hospital because of its friendly staff, quality care, and dedication to creating a comfortable environment for their patients. This state-of-the-art, four story hospital was developed by award-winning Moon Mayoras Architects; a firm dedicated to the development of elegant architecture in health care facilities. The classic stone statuary and archways of this gorgeous piece of architecture, built in 2012, make it one of the most timeless facilities to ever hit our rankings.
- Reading Hospital – Tower Health, West Reading, PA
(8,010 votes) Every physical detail on Reading’s campus and every personal interaction between staff and patients is delivered with the same purpose: “Advancing Health. Transforming Lives.” This message is carried on every day by its compassionate physicians and staff. Reading Hospital understands that physical surroundings impact a patient’s sense of calm and healing. Simple but elegant, bypassing the colors, curves, glass-and-steel architecture of other newer medical facilities. Their 150 private patient rooms overlook a calming healing garden that contains fountains and an exterior walkway to the Reading Museum Arboretum.
- Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, Wheaton, IL
(8,446 votes) It is no surprise this hospital is in this year’s top 20 after making our 2018, 2016, 2013 and 2009 rankings. Filled with hardworking doctors, nurses, and staff members, Marianjoy is committed to creating a place of healing for its patients, that feels just as comfortable as their own home. The facility features a warm-water therapy pool overlooking a first-of-its-kind rain garden as part of a delightful multi-level green campus.
- Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, Boston, MA
(9,108 votes) Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital strives to attain excellence in patient care services, provided in a learning environment with dignity, compassion, and respect. State-of-the-art technology, a dedicated staff, and a beautiful facility help them achieve such a high level of healing. This 171 bed non-profit, community teaching hospital features a curved windowed facade that hearkens back to the curved two-story castle-like front of the original 19th Century facility, whose lush flower beds were so beautiful they were featured on a local postcard.
- Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, Monterey, CA
(12,283 votes) From gorgeous architecture, comfortable patient rooms, friendly staff members, and food service for patients and staff is as good as it gets, one cannot help but get well and be motivated to make healthy lifestyle changes. Indoor and outdoor fountains and waterfalls cascade into broad pools with islands of rock showcasing local flora, inspiringly landscaped into a facility that needs to be seen both by day and in the evening to be fully appreciated. And beyond the hospital grounds, what a view!
- Broughton Hospital, Morganton, NC
(19,004 votes) Broughton Hospital is comprised of an incredibly caring team of staff members who are committed to their work. A hospital that looks like an English castle that has stood the test of time and still stands as beautiful as it did when it was first built. The 135-year-old marble-and-brick facility is also the oldest building ever to make our rankings. Broughton jumps to the #13 spot for our 2019 ranking, after making an appearance in the 2018 and 2017 list. As with 2018, Broughton is the sole “heritage” building on our 2019 list and only the second ever, after Johns Hopkins.
- Norton Sound Regional Hospital, Nome, AK
(21,447 votes) This hospital is not only involved in the daily healing of its patients, but also in the well-being of the surrounding community and environment. Ranked #11 in our 2013 list, #6 in our 2016 list, and #9 on our 2017 list, this three-story, 36-bed facility again sits at #12 this year, while doubling its number of votes from the previous year. Tribally-owned and operated, the facility is the hub of Alaska’s Bering Strait region. The $168-million facility serves a population of 10,000, in an untamed wilderness that includes the city of Nome and 15 surrounding villages.
- Baptist Medical Center Beaches, Jacksonville Beach, FL
(24,017 votes) Entering our rankings for the first time and located on the beautiful northeast coast of Florida is Baptist Medical Center Beaches. This 122-bed facility is consistently cited by patients for its caring, compassionate and helpful staff who make a clear effort to make patients feel comfortable. In 2017, Truven Health Analytics ranked Baptist Medical Center as one of the 100 ‘Top Hospitals in the U.S.’ based on overall organizational performance.
- Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest, Lake Forest, IL
(123,537 votes) Lake Forest Hospital continues to be recognized for excellence. It is consistently included as one of the top hospitals in Illinois and Chicago by U.S. News & World Report and also has received Magnet© designation, the gold standard for nursing excellence and innovation. The curved glass facades of the facility reflect beautiful views of the mountains surrounding the Salt Lake Valley and it is no surprise this is the second year in a row that the nationally recognized National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center has been placed in Soliant’s Top 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals.

They do so by ensuring their patients are always comfortable and seen to by passionate staff. This beauty is also visible through the hospital’s aesthetics. The facility has neon blue, green and pink spotlights that shine across playfully-curving balconies. - UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA
(416,658 votes) Finishing in the top 10 for a second year straight, the newly-completed Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC was also ranked seventh on our 2010 list when it opened, as well as 10th by HealthExecNews in its 2012 list of most beautiful hospitals in the world. The hospital features expansive rooms for families, including a center dedicated to the needs of siblings, as well as 10 playrooms that are fully equipped with toys, movies, games, and books to offer a comforting distraction to patients. Though its current home is state-of-the-art, the original Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1890.

- UT Health Quitman, Quitman, TX
(531,837 votes) UT Health Quitman is committed to the spirit and people, history and future of East Texas. Their compassionate staff fights for healthier neighborhoods and for higher qualities of life. This small 28-bed facility is no stranger to national recognition either. In 2018 it was named one of Becker’s Hospital Review Top Critical Access Hospitals To Know. In 2016 and 2017 it was recognized by the Texas State Office of Rural Health Recognition for Excellence in Patient Satisfaction.

- Hackensack Meridian Health Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, NJ
(924,415 votes) Previously 4th place in our rankings, this 468-bed acute care medical center located on the Navesink River has been a six-time recipient of an “A” rating for patient safety and named among the “Best General Hospitals” in the U.S. by The Leapfrog Group. Even with growing economic pressures most hospitals are facing today, this hospital still focuses on helping their community through outreach, education and more.
- Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, Fort Myers, FL
(2,315,695 votes) Once again, a stand-out hospital, Golisano’s scored 29-times more votes this year than it did to land the top spot in 2018. This hospital, solely focused on children, boasts bold custom primary-colored hallways that sing with hues painted literally into walls and furniture, as well as ceiling-mounted lighting effects. Common areas are set-up like modern children’s museum or science center displays. Golisano’s is more than just a place where children get treated, it is a place where they feel empowered. What really stands out about Golisano’s is how they make their patients feel – at home.
